The custom called GEET

The custom of GEET encompasses quite a few types of Urdu poetry, viz. Hamd, Naat, Sehra, Mehendi, Doli and Rukhsat to name but the very basic few. Every singly one a prayer on its own, full of well-wishes. The custom of singing GEET is not peculiar to the Urdu speaking peoples. This joyous festivity is as old as time, for it is a human trait to express feeling, and the GEET culture involves happiness as well as sadness. All of us simply have different means of expressing the way we feel. GEET is the culmination of people coming together in loving brotherhood to share joy, to share sorrow. GEET brings people together in a way unique to its own demand. The joyful laughter of loved-ones is an experience on its own.

SAGAA-I
Getting ENGAGED sends a clear message to any further suitor: “This person is spoken for!”

SEHRA
The SEHRA is the bridal garland. It should preferably be made up of fresh flowers that bring the promise of a fragrant new dawn. Roses are preferred above all flowers for the beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has said: “Should you wish to experience the fragrance of my (s.a.w.) perspiration, smell a rose.”

MEHENDI
The application of MEHENDI (Henna) is a habit of the beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). It colours and cools the skin, and cools the blood system as well.

RUKHSAT
Saying FAREWELL mean exactly that: “Fare well” in your future endeavours. It is saying good bye to the previous whilst at the same time, welcoming the new life ahead!
